Chicago Fire spoilers: What happened in season 10 episode 4?
Chicago Fire had lots of unresolved stories headed into this week’s episode. There was the uphill battle that Brett (Kara Killmer) was mounting against the ambulance shortage, the dilemma that Cruz (Joe Minoso) faced as he tried to get his confidence back, and of course, the decision Casey (Jesse Spencer) made to go visit the sons of his late friend Andy Darden (Corey Sorenson).
The first two subplots get concrete solutions, but the third proves trickier. Casey’s time away from the firehouse is supposed to be temporary, but his encounters with Griffin (Cameron Scott Roberts) and the troubled Tim lead him to consider leaving Chicago for good.
Be warned that the rest of the post contains detailed spoilers for the episode “The Right Thing”!
What happened on Chicago Fire last night? (October 13th)
The episode opens on a sweet moment. Casey gets ready to leave for his trip, and Brett playfully asks why he doesn’t leave more items at her place. The two embrace, though its clear that Brett is reluctant to part ways with her new boyfriend so soon.
Chief Hawkins (Jimmy Nicholas) agrees to look into Brett’s request for additional paramedic help, and while she struggles to make a good first impression (her painful attempts at small talk provide some much needed relief in an otherwise somber episode), she proves herself adept in the field.
Hawkins gives her paramedicine program the green light, and an overjoyed Brett enlists Mouch to help out. The celebration is short-lived though, because Brett’s attempts to contact Casey are met with distraction or unintentional disinterest. The firefighter is too caught up in the lives of Griffin and Ben that he fails to acknowledge Brett’s comments. Even after she’s held at knifepoint and nearly attacked by an overdose victim.
Is Casey from Chicago Fire leaving the show?
This plays into what showrunner Derek Haas teased as “complications” for the couple. Elsewhere, Casey tries and fails to reconnect with Ben. It’s implied that Ben is dabbling in drugs, and the kid makes it clear that he wants nothing to do with Casey and his acts of kindness.
Casey eventually clarifies that Ben’s dad was his best friend, and while Ben may not remember him, he cares for both young men deeply. The two reach a slightly better understanding, but its clear that there’s still lots of groundwork to be laid before the two can get along.

Casey has a meeting with Griffin and Ben’s teachers, during which he mentions his plans to bring them back to Chicago with him. The teachers shoot down the idea, asserting that the boys have been uprooted too many times in their lives, and what they need most is stability. The advice hits Casey, who returns to the firehouse in the episode’s final moments.
In a brief, crucial scene with Herrmann (David Eigenberg), Casey vents about his love for the job and his love for the Darden boys. Herrmann comforts him by saying that Andy would have been proud to see his kids in Casey’s care. After a long pause, Casey arrives at the conclusion that he should leave Firehouse 51 and move to Oregon to become a foster parent.
What a cliffhanger! Especially as fans approach the show’s landmark 200th episode. We can’t wait see what Chicago Fire has in store fo Casey and the rest of the fire squad.
