Are Jay and Will Halstead brothers in real life?

Jay and Will Halstead are the most prominent siblings in the One Chicago universe. Both men are skilled in their field and both function as main characters within their respective shows, Chicago PD and Chicago Med.

The similarities between Jay and Will are so pronounced that some fans have even questioned whether the actors playing them, Jesse Lee Soffer and Nick Gehlfuss, are actually related. Could the Halstead brothers be siblings in real life?

No, Soffer and Gehlfuss are not actually related. In addition to not sharing any family, the two actors were born in different states (New York and Ohio, respectively) and did not know each other prior to being cast in the One Chicago universe.

That said, Soffer and Gehlfuss have a developed a brotherly bond over the course of their shows. The two men are friends in their personal lives, and they even sprung into action to save a real life victim during one of their get-togethers.

During a recent Comic Con interview, Soffer recounted a story where he and Gehlfuss witnessed a car flip in the middle of a Chicago street. Both men sprung into action and were able to recover the driver from the scene before they suffered any major injuries.

"“She sat there, and she was really rattled, and she looked at him, and she goes ‘You’re – but wait – you’re–’. It was like a weird meta experience for her that the Halstead brothers were saving her life.”"

In a separate interview with One Chicago Center, Soffer said that he loves doing scenes with Gehlfuss because they get a chance to play up the banter and good-humored mockery that real siblings showcase. This bond also spills over into the ways in which the characters would support each other in life-changing decisions.

When asked whether Will Halstead would need to start drafting his Best Man speech for Jay’s wedding, Soffer hinted at some possibly dramatic developments for both men.

“I think it’s going to be so bumpy at first, that I don’t foresee Will needing to help Jay with his Best Man’s speech,” the actor stated. “If Will is involved, then that would mean that everything is going well and is probably running smoothly for Jay because maybe the marriage is really going to happen.”

Whatever these fictional brothers get up to next, it’s sure to be enthralling.
