Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) has had a troubled life. There’s seemingly been one tragedy after another for the grizzled cop, dating back to before the start of Chicago PD. This sense of loss informed the latest episode, “Trust Me”, which saw Voight team up with a mysterious informant named Anna (Carmela Zumbado).

The episode also referenced Voight’s son Justin (Josh Segarra), who was a notable presence in the first three seasons of the show. Given that it’s been several years since Justin was in Voight’s life, there may be some viewers who are unaware of his fate, and the lasting impact it had on the cop.

With that in mind, here’s a recap of Justin Voight’s life and his untimely, tragic death.

Hank Voight’s son on Chicago PD

Justin was an integral part of Voight’s story from the beginning. Both characters debuted in the Chicago Fire episode “Professional Courtesy” as a result of Justin’s drunk driving. He crashed his car while under the influence of alcohol, and the accident resulted in a boy being paralyzed from the waist down. Voight tried some corrupt tactics to clear his son’s name, but they only led to his arrest and brief jail stint.

Voight and Justin’s relationship continued to be strained throughout Chicago PD. The two men had been distant from one another since the death of Voight’s wife (Justin’s mother), and any attempts to get close resulted in disagreements. Justin continued to hang out on the wrong side of the law, eventually landing in hot water when he becomes an accessory to the murder of a local gangster.

Voight buries the case upon learning of Justin’s involvement, and forces him to enlist in the United States Army to keep him out of trouble. He then shoots the man who linked Justin to the murder. Sadly, Voight’s efforts to straighten his son out prove futile.

In the season 3 episode “Start Digging”, Justin is assaulted at random and later dies as a result of his injuries. Voight is devastated by the loss, and he goes on a revenge mission to bring justice to whoever was responsible. He eventually tracks the man down and forces him to dig his own grave before he shoots and kills him.

As tragic as Justin’s fate was, he lives on through his son Daniel. He fathered the boy with a woman named Olive Morgan (Caroline Neff), and though Daniel is rarely seen on the show, Voight does often mention him in passing. In fact, Voight has it set up so that all of his savings go to Daniel after his death.
