If one had to name a villain for Chicago Med season 7, it would be Dr. Matt Cooper (Michael Rady). The newcomer has been up to no good from the moment he arrived, whether it be jeopardizing the lives of patients or trying to push cardiac monitors on unsuspecting clients so he can pocket the money.

Cooper has been a terrific opponent for Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss), who’s made a point of going undercover and getting close to the doctor in the hopes that he can catch him performing illegal dealings on the spot.

Well, things took a turn for the worse in the episode “A Square Peg In a Round Hole”. Halstead witnessed Dr. Cooper snorting cocaine on the job, which in turn led to an overdose and near death. The big question moving forward is: will Dr. Cooper survive is drug overdose? Is he already gone?

Is Dr. Matt Cooper dead on Chicago Med?

No, Dr. Cooper is not dead. Despite overdosing, Halstead and Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) managed to intervene and save his life before he flatlined. It was confirmed at the end of the episode that Cooper was alive and kicking, though the same can’t be said for his career.

Cooper will almost certainly lose his job at the ED. Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) will fire him for using drugs at work, and his deal with the Vascom monitors will fall through now that he can no longer inspire trust in the patients that are meant to be targeted.

Presumably, Cooper’s exit means Vascom is no longer a threat at the hospital. Goodwin has already told Vascom representatives that she’s not interested in stocking their monitors at the ED, and while he was not officially part of the company, Cooper was the only doctor who went to bat for the product.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Chicago Med showrunners handle Cooper’s exit. While he may be gone from the ED, that doesn’t mean he will have to leave the show for good. He could always come back in a different capacity, especially if he feels as though he’s been wronged by Halstead and the rest of the team.

Then again, the return of Dr. Choi may indicate that season 7 is ready to turn and head in a different direction. The promo for the next episode has already hinted at some lingering trauma for Dr. Choi, which could play a big role in shaping the rest of the season.
