Chicago Med continues its quest to find a new 51 lieutenant. Last week saw the introduction of newcomer Jason Pelham (Brett Dalton), an upright firefighter who’s by-the-approach clashed with the comfortability of his predecessor, Casey (Jesse Spencer). Heads were bumped, and Pelham is still trying to find his footing.

The episode “What Happened at Whiskey Point” sheds more light on Pelham and the reactions he elicits from the rest of the 51 team. There’s also a move away from the church arson case and on some hair-raising rescues involving construction and collapsed scaffolding.

Be warned that the rest of the post contains detailed spoilers for the latest episode of Chicago Fire!

What happened on Chicago Fire last night? (November 10th)

What Happened at Whiskey Point” opens with Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso) talking about his infant son and the trouble he’s having enrolling him in private preschools. His preoccupation with being a new father pops up occasionally throughout the episode, which serves as a nice counterbalance to the emotional crisis he was facing earlier in season 10.

Things take a turn when Pelham arrives, however. Severide (Taylor Kinney) pulls him aside and asks whether he plans to stay for a while, and Pelham responds that he will stay as long as the other lieutenant on Chief Boden’s radar remains busy with another assignment. This prompts Severide to contact Stella (Miranda Rae Mayo) and ask her how long she plans to be away for her Girls on Fire program.

The uncertainty of Pelham’s past continues to be a talking point around the fire station. Mouch (Christian Stolte) and Herrmann (David Eigenberg) pull Boden (Eamonn Walker) and confide that while Pelham is a good guy, he’s been bounced from six stations in the last two years. Boden is sheepish about the information, but is clearly taken aback by the spotty track record.

The 51 spring into action to save a woman from a collapsed scaffolding accident, and there’s some additional tension between Pelham and Gallo (Alberto Rosende), who can’t seem to get on the Lt.’s good side, but most of the important stuff takes place at the station. Herrmann decides to move into Casey’s old office without asking, which visibly bothers Severide.

The centerpiece moment of the episode comes when Boden calls Pelham into his office. He says that he’d been considering bringing on full-time at the 51, but a little bit of digging revealed that he had multiple suspensions to his name. Pelham refuses to divulge what the suspensions were for and leaves the office after voicing his passion for the 51, which leaves Boden understandably puzzled.

Eventually, Mouch discovers that Pelham was suspended from his position at Whiskey Point for punching his superior officer in the face. Nobody knows the reasoning behind the punch, but the officer in question left the fire house a week later. Boden tries to extrapolate the truth from the cagey Pelham, but he’s saved by the bell, so to speak. A call comes in and the squad to field a call.

The episode ends on a unique cliffhanger of sorts, in that the success of the call and the truth behind Pelham’s checkered past are both unknown. Fans will have to wait until the show returns for its winter episode to discover what happens in both instances. As far as cliffhangers, go, this was a good one.
