Hank Voight is the centerpiece of Chicago PD. He’s the man who makes it all run, who can navigate the legal system to get results and who can come to the aid of his IU officers whenever they need it. That said, Voight might be the one who needs help.

The latest episode of Chicago PD, “Fractures”, dropped a bombshell on fans when Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) was targeted by the FBI and given the choice to either save himself and Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) or Voight. The episode wrapped before he could decide, but suffice to say, none of us would want to be Voight right about now.

The panic over whether Halstead will sell Voight out for the murder of Roy Walton has stirred up some confusion as to whether Voight’s actor, Jason Beghe, has plans to leave the show. Is it true?

Is Hank Voight leaving Chicago PD?

No, Jason Beghe is not leaving. There’s been no mention of the actor’s exit, and given that he is the protagonist of the entire series, the Chicago PD showrunners would have set characters in place to compensate for him being gone. Beghe’s character is merely going through a tense time and is going to have to navigate his way out of it or face (more) prison time.

In truth, controversy is a staple of the Voight character. He made his debut on Chicago Fire under similarly unsavory circumstances, as he was trying to bribe Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) to look the other way on his son’s DUI charge. He wound up in prison when it was believed that he was going to attack Casey, but he was later released in exchange for crucial information.

Chicago PD showrunner Rick Eid spoke at length about Voight’s future and the struggles he will face throughout season 9.

"“The events of the season finale showed how hard that change has been for [Voight], especially when circumstances test him to the extreme”, Eid told TV Line. “It’s something Voight will continue to grapple with. How does he fit into 2021? It’s a constant question.”"

Given that Voight has had a relatively mild (if slightly tense) season 9 so far, it makes sense that the “circumstances” that push him to his extreme is the upcoming conflict with Halstead and Upton. We’re incredibly curious to see how he gets out of it.
