Chicago Fire: Is Girls on Fire a real program?
Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) has been busy in Chicago Fire season 10. The character has barely been onscreen, as she’s been traveling the country and promoting the Girls on Fire program.
The program has caused drama when it comes to Kidd’s future, and appointing a new 51 lieutenant, but one can’t deny the good intentions of the program. The emphasis on Girls on Fire, however, and the role it plays in the Chicago Fire storyline, has led some fans to ask whether the program is real.
Here’s what we know about Girls on Fire and whether the youth program exists in the real world.
What is Girls on Fire on Chicago Fire?
Yes, Girls on Fire is a real program. According to official website, it is “an incorporated association that provides firefighting and resilience programs for girls and young women”.
It’s a program that’s independent of any firefighting organizations, and is run in partnership with a host of other groups including Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, Forestry Corporation of NSW and NSW State Emergency Service.
The program was founded by Bronnie Mackintosh, who wanted to a find a way to help children and teenagers become active participants in their communities. “We teach community resilience so participants can make an active contribution to help their communities prepare or recover from fire and other emergencies”, she added.
Mackintosh was uniquely qualified to start the Girls on Fire program. She’s worked in firefighting, rescue, operational communications and has spend the last 16 years serving as a station officer with the Fire and Rescue NSW.

Ted X Sydney reported that Mackintosh was “seconded to the Australasian Fire Authorities Council (AFAC) to assist with diversity and inclusion programs for the fire and emergency services sector.” Girls on Fire would qualify as one of these inclusionary programs.
Currently Girls on Fire events are only available in select cities throughout throughout the world, including Hawkesbury, Ontario; Kempsey, New South Wales; and Newcastle, North East England. Click here for additional cities and locations.
