In the season 6 finale of Chicago Med, Ethan (Brian Tee) found himself fighting for his life after being shot by one of Dean’s (Steven Weber) former patients. While Ethan ultimately pulled through, it was made clear in the finale’s final moments that Ethan had a long recovery ahead of him in season 7.

Leading up to the season, it was expected that Ethan’s recovery would play out over the course of the early episodes of the season and while this was indeed the case, his recovery occurred off-screen with updates provided to viewers across the first few episodes of the season.

After missing the first six episodes of the season, Brian Tee finally returned with Ethan making his season 7 debut in the seventh episode of the season. While Ethan was still recovering from his injury, he seemed to finally be closing in on a return to the ED until his recovery took an unexpected turn for the worst in the eighth episode of the season.

Is Brian Tee going to miss more episodes of Chicago Med?

At this time, it has not yet been confirmed by NBC whether Brian Tee is going to miss additional episodes of Chicago Med season 7 following his recent two-episode return; however, there seems to be a reason for concern.

In the eighth episode of the season, Ethan pushed himself a bit too far upon returning to the ED and set his recovery back immensely. As we discovered in the closing moments of the episode, Ethan had decided to have the multi-level spinal fusion procedure recommended to him which was the best step in his recovery.

Unfortunately, the procedure requires two months of rehab post-op, which triggered Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) to tell Ethan to take as much time as he needed to take care of himself. The exchange seemed to suggest Ethan might be stepping away for another handful of episodes — after all, he missed the first six episodes of the season while away at rehab.

Is Brian Tee leaving Chicago Med?

While it’s looking like Brian Tee might miss a few more episodes of season 7, Tee is not leaving the show. In fact, he just recently extended his contract with the show and remains a series regular despite his absence from many episodes this season.

Over the offseason, Tee was cast in Amazon Prime’s new drama Expats and NBC has been accommodating of his commitment to the project in giving him time away from Chicago Med to film Expats. Rather than having his character’s recovery unfold on-screen, the writers have used the storyline as a means to accommodate Tee’s schedule in having Ethan recover off-screen instead.
