Chicago Med: Is Brian Tee going to miss more episodes of season 7?

Dr. Ethan Choi has been hard to pin down in Chicago Med season 7. The character missed the bulk of the season’s first half, and while his return was a long-awaited triumph for fans and the rest of the ED staff, it remains to be seen if Choi is sticking around.

Given the busy schedule of actor Brian Tee, Choi remains something of a question mark for the rest of season 7. Will the character rejoin the ED full time or will he disappear again to recover from his near fatal accident in season 6?

Here’s what we know about Tee and the future of his beloved character.

Is Dr. Ethan Choi leaving Chicago Med?

Choi’s comeback was seemingly cut short during the episode “Just As a Snake Sheds Its Skin”. He performed an old school method on a patient who was in critical condition, and while the method worked, it required him to take his back brace off. Shortly afterward, an MRI revealed that Choi had multiple herniated lumbar disks.

The episode ended with Choi telling Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) that he was going to undergo multi-level spinal fusion surgery. Generally, a surgery of this magnitude requires two months of post-op rehab.

All signs point to Brian Tee taking more time away from Chicago Med. The actor will be missing more episodes from season 7, largely due to his prior commitments to the Amazon show Expats. Tee’s role in Expats was the initial reason that his character was briefly written out of Chicago Med and the showrunners will once again accommodate his absence.

Fortunately, Tee has no plans to leave Chicago Med for good. The actor clearly has a desire to stay in the ED, and the plot complications surrounding his character are merely a way for him to remain involved.

Tee is listed in the credits for the mid-season finale, titled “Secret Santa Has a Gift for You”. It looks like the episode will be holiday-themed, so it’ll be nice for fans to get an extra glimpse of Dr. Choi before he bows out for his surgery. It’s unclear when Choi will return full-time, but we can all rest assured that he will be back sooner than later.
