April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) made a sudden departure from Chicago Med at the start of season 7. The longtime character decided to shift her career path, and turned in her ED credentials to enter a nursing program.

The exit surprised many fans, especially when compared to the dramatic, drawn-out exits of other major characters in the One Chicago Universe. The lack of buildup and sendoff has led some to wonder whether April is coming back to the ED to resolve her character anytime soon.

Here’s what you need to know about April and her future on Chicago Med.

Did April leave Chicago Med?

April was accepted into a Nurse Practitioner program at the tail end of season 6, and it required her to leave her position at the ED indefinitely. It remains to be seen whether more information will be given about April’s status as a Nurse Practitioner, as there’s been little mention of her progress since the season 7 premiere.

In comparison to Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto), who received a more traditional sendoff, April’s exit was almost downplayed. According to Chicago Med showrunner Diane Frolov, this was because the writers felt that the character was already in a good place. “We didn’t really discuss that because we don’t see that April is gone in the same way, in the sense that we know April’s OK”, she told TV Line.

The offscreen cause for April’s exit also factors into her indefinite business. Yaya DaCosta was cast as a lead in the NBC series Our Kind of People, and has stated during interviews that she wanted to pursue new and challenging material as an actress.

“I really believe that every experience I’ve had in my personal and professional life has prepared me in some way for this moment” DaCosta told the NY Post.

There’s been no concrete plans to have DaCosta return as April, but co-showrunner Andrew Schneider remains hopeful that we haven’t seen the last of the character. He’s made it clear that the actress is welcome to return to Chicago Med whenever she chooses, whether it be in a leading or in a cameo capacity.
