Chicago PD season 9: SPOILER get married in jaw-dropping finale twist
More than any of the other One Chicago mid-season finales, Chicago PD has lots of plot threads to resolve. There’s the standard case of the week and the decision that Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) has to make in terms of selling Voight (Jason Beghe) to the FBI.
These various threads do get answered in dramatic and satisfying fashion, but no one could have anticipated the way the episode ended.
Be warned that there are detailed spoilers for the mid-season finale of Chicago PD!
Did Halstead and Upton break up on Chicago PD?
Exasperated after having to deal with the FBI, Halstead arrives home to a nervous Upton (Tracy Spiridakos). He assures her that they’re safe from the authorities with regards to the Roy killing, and then, in a spontaneous gesture, he asks Upton to marry him.
Not eventually, either: right away. An overjoyed Upton agrees to marry him that night, and a scene of them making love is intercut with them getting married in a private ceremony. It’s probably the most subdued wedding in all of the One Chicago universe, but its incredibly fitting given the type of people Halstead and Upton are.
The ending is a nice mirror of the season 9 opener, in which a bereft Upton proposes to Halstead after agreeing to cover up Roy’s death with Voight. There was some confusion on Halstead’s part as to why she decided to do it then, but they ultimately decided to move forward.

The Roy murder has been tied to their engagement throughout, and the (seeming) resolution of the case lines up with the resolution of their relationship. It’s also a reaffirming capper to the first half of season 9, which was rife with uncertainty over whether they would make it as a couple.
It also clarifies a comment that actor Nick Gehlfuss, who plays Halstead’s brother Will, made when asked about a potential wedding. He claimed that he wasn’t sure he’d be on hand to give advice or a toast at his brother’s wedding, and while we considered the possibility that there wouldn’t be a wedding, we now know it was because the ceremony was private.
It’ll be endlessly fascinating to see how the couple handle their marriage, and whether they decide to share it with the rest of the IU.
