Chicago PD is back with answers. The heat had been turned up on Voight (Jason Beghe), Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer), and Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), and it looked like all three cops were headed for a bad end.

The mid-season finale, titled “A Way Out”, balances the struggle to wiggle their way out of the Roy Walton killing and a case involving a drug runner and a shooting on a city bus.

Be warned that the rest of the post contains detailed spoilers for the latest episode of Chicago PD!

What happened on Chicago PD last night? (December 8th)

The episode resumes where the last one left off, as Halstead drives home from his meeting with the FBI. He’s torn over how to handle the Walton case, and he knows that if he plays it wrong it could mean the end of his career. Before he gets home, however, he witnesses a shooting on a city bus.

The team is called out to investigate the shooting, during which Halstead takes Voight aside and tells him about his ultimatum. Voight isn’t shaken at all by the news, and sets about concocting a plan to get all three of them out of hot water.

Halstead and Voight eventually hit on a plan involving the brother of FBI Agent North (Alex Morf). Halstead pretends to be a junkie looking to buy, and he convinces the brother to follow him to a “space place”. The place turns out to be where Voight is hiding, and he lays out a simple case of blackmail.

Voight’s angle is that Agent North’s brother is a repeat offender and that the agent has taken advantage of his position to get his brother out of legal troubles. Halstead is hesitant to turn to blackmail, knowing that his decision will nag him for the rest of his life.

To his credit, Voight sees this and offers an alterative. He tells Halstead to turn him into the FBI, as he’s always known that his shady handling of cases in the past would catch up with him. Halstead counters Voight’s offer by telling him that he’s good for the city of Chicago, and selling him out to the FBI would only mean that more criminals would be free to roam the streets.

Begrudgingly, Halstead goes to Agent North and blackmails him. The latter asks him if he really wants to go about things this way, and laments the fact that Voight was able to corrupt him. Halstead says that everybody changes everybody and leaves North to grapple with his decision, in a neat reversal of last episode’s ending.

Halstead drives home to a nervous Upton. He tells her that the blackmail was successful, and then he proposes that they get married immediately. She agrees, they make love, and they tie the knot in an intimate private ceremony.

There aren’t any major cliffhangers going on this episode, as the biggest questions going into the second half of the season is whether Halstead and Upton will share the details of their marriage with the rest of the world.
