Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) and Severide (Taylor Kinney) have been one of the most beloved couples in Chicago Fire history. They balance out each other’s personality quirks and support one another through tough times. Well, for the most part.

Season 10 has been a different story. Kidd has been busy promoting her Girls on Fire program on the road, and despite Severide’s attempts to stay in touch with her, she’s been mostly quiet. The mid-season finale, “Winterland”, showcases several examples of Severide trying to reach out to Kidd through text, only to get no responses back.

Here’s a rundown of Stellaride and what the future holds for the couple.

Are Stella and Severide still together on Chicago Fire?

Severide has grown increasingly exasperated with his relationship over the course of season 10, and nowhere was this more evident than when he agreed to grab drinks with Wendy Seager (Andy Allo). She urged him to consider a new career path, and her blatant flirtations were reciprocated.

Severide hasn’t crossed any lines, but as evidenced by the fact that he tries to message Kidd when Seager goes to the restroom shows that he’s being torn between two paths. His uncertainty hit an apex at the end of the episode, when he returns home to find Kidd there, unannounced. He is not happy or angry, just confused as to what her presence means.

Chicago Fire showrunner Derek Haas discussed Kidd’s return during a recent interview with TV Insider. He confirmed that the reunion between her and Severide was “not happy” and hinted at what was to come for the 51 team members.

“[Severide] got tired of waiting for her, especially when you’re putting out there that you’d love for her to come back and you don’t hear back and you don’t hear back”, Haas explained. “Well, now we’ve got musical chairs and not enough chairs left for the people there. There’s a lot that Kidd’s going to have to navigate coming back, both professionally at Firehouse 51 and then personally with Severide.”

The showrunner also alluded to the Seager friendship, and how Severide will eventually have to explain his dynamic with the investigator to Kidd. He did pinpoint a major hiccup in their romance, however, stating “they have a lot of communicating to do” and that “Severide’s not the best communicator, as we’ve displayed over 10 years.”

While the immediate future seems muddled with miscommunication and mixed feelings, it does seem like Kidd and Severide will be able to work through their issues. The couple have been a rock on the show, and given that the other core 51 relationship, Brettsy, has had to resort to a tentative long-distance dynamic, we’d be surprised if the writers decided to end this one as well.

Whatever the fate of Stellaride, whether it be a wedding or separate ways, its sure to provide lots of exciting drama as we enter the second half of season 10.
