Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) has the fate of the IU in his hands. He’s been blackmailed by the FBI into selling Voight (Jason Beghe) out for the murder of Roy Walton (Michael Maize), but if agrees to do so, he could jeopardize all the good work that Voight has done for the city of Chicago.

The biggest question heading into the mid-season finale for Chicago PD is whether Halstead would take the bait and sacrifice his boss to protect himself and Upton (Tracy Spiridakos).

It wasn’t a stretch to imagine that he would do it, given how tense things have been between him and Voight for most of the season. But did he? Be warned that there are detailed spoilers for the episode “A Way Out” below.

Does Voight go to prison on Chicago PD?

Halstead actually wastes little time bringing Voight in on his dilemma. He tells the commanding officer that he’s being blackmailed by FBI Agent North, and together they conspire to exploit the agent’s troubled younger brother.

Halstead then agrees to go undercover as an addict and seduce North’s brother into a situation where Voight can confront him and let him know that he’s freedom has largely been due to his brother pulling legal strings.

Voight can sense that Halstead isn’t comfortable with this blackmail arrangement, and he even tries to preserve the younger officer’s sense of morality by offering to take the fall for the Walton death. He assures Halstead that he wouldn’t blame him for turning him in, but Halstead points out that Voight is too valuable an asset to the city to lock up behind bars.

So, despite not wanting to, Halstead reconvenes with Agent North and tells him that they have evidence to support the fact that he’s helped his brother out of legal jams and will happily leak the evidence should North go any further with the Walton investigation. The hapless agent has no choice but to agree to the terms, and they part ways for the last time.

Afterwards, Halstead goes to Voight’s home and tells him that the blackmail gambit was a success. He also tells Voight that things are going to be different from now on, and that he will need to be more honest with him moving forward if they are going to continue to work together. Voight agrees, and they call it a night.

Thankfully, the IU lives to see another day, and though tense, the relationship between Halstead and Voight appears to be on the mend.
