Chicago Fire season 10 is officially on its winter break. The previous episode was the last one of 2021. When does Chicago Fire return in 2022?

If you thought the previous episode was mean for such a major cliffhanger, you’re not alone. It’s even worse when you realize that episode was the fall finale. There are no more episodes of Chicago Fire in 2021.

We’re left with questions about Stella and Severide’s relationship throughout the winter break. On top of that, we find out that Pelham has been offered the lieutenant spot on Truck 81, which leaves us with questions about Stella’s future with Firehouse 51. Are we losing her completely?

Why is Chicago Fire taking a break?

This hiatus is completely normal. This time of year, the live TV ratings take a dip. Broadcast networks put their big shows on hold and bring in the holiday programming. It’s a way to protect the expensive scripted shows from potentially being canceled due to low holiday ratings.

We should all be used to this break by now. It’s actually shorter than normal since the fall finale aired in December rather than before Thanksgiving this year.

When will Chicago Fire return in 2022?

It now comes down to the show’s return. When exactly will Chicago Fire return in 2022? We already have the answer to that question.

NBC has set the return date for Wednesday, Jan. 5. The show will air in the 9/8c timeslot, sandwiched between the new episodes of Chicago Med and Chicago Fire.

Is another Chicago Fire hiatus coming?

There will be another break in 2022. NBC will air the Winter Olympics in February, which means that the scripted shows need to take another hiatus for a couple of weeks.

This could be a good thing. One of the big benefits of a hiatus is that filming gets to continue and can get ahead of episodes aired. With the pandemic protocols, episodes are taking longer than normal to film, so the episodes aired are catching up to the episodes filmed quickly. With the hiatus for the Olympics, the show can get ahead with filming keeping future breaks to a minimum.
