What happened to Jones on Chicago Fire?
Rebecca Jones was a central character during Chicago Fire‘s second season. She was in the same fire training group as Gabriela Dawson (Monica Raymund), and while their dynamic was strained at times, they shared a mutual admiration for one another.
Sadly, Jones’ family lineage placed an enormous amount of pressure on her. Jones’ father was a CFD officer, and all three of her brothers were recognized for their heroic work in the department as well.
To make matters worse, her father felt that female firefighters had little to no use, so her chief support system was consistently her biggest critic.
Given how long ago Jones appeared on the show, we thought it be a good time to brush up on her character history and her ultimate fate.
Who played Jones on Chicago Fire?
Jones was played by Australian actress Daisy Betts. She lent a humanity to the character that shined through even when she was butting heads with the more-established 51 team members. She ran into conflict with Severide (Taylor Kinney) when she suggested a firefighter be let go due to his slow response time.
Jones also ran afoul of Casey (Jesse Spencer) when she ignored a direct order from him on a call. She proves to be closest with Herrmann (David Eigenberg), who supports her through some tough times, particularly as her father begins to exert his influence in an effort to force her into a desk job.
In the end, Jones’ father proves to be too overbearing to overcome. She acquiesces to his desire to get out of the field, and Herrmann attempts to remedy the sting by telling her to seek him out for advice whenever necessary.
Chicago Fire Jones death
In the episode “Until Your Feet Leave the Ground”, Jones can be seen writing a letter to Dawson at her home. She sets the letter on her kitchen counter before walking away, and while the image by itself may be ambiguous, the devastating news that Dawson gets at the end of the episode is not: Jones committed suicide.

Executive producer Matt Olmstead broke down the causes behind Jones’ suicide during an interview with TV Guide. “In her mind, her dad is only reminded of [her mother’s death] whenever he sees her”, he explained. “So this weird sense of disapproval and disconnect with her dad trying to perhaps overcompensate, get his affections, or to rebel against what he wants for her to do.”
Jones certainly ranks among the most tragic characters in the entire One Chicago universe, but she will be fondly remembered for her dedication and desire to help others.
Chicago Fire returns in 2022 on Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 9/8c on NBC. Catch up on the season so far on Hulu.
