Chicago PD showrunner promises ‘exciting’ Burzek scenes in season 9
Ruzek (Patrick Flueger) and Burgess (Marina Squerciati) have been relegated to the background of recent Chicago PD episodes, largely because the rest of the IU has been brink of ruin.
Voight (Jason Beghe) and Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) had to resort to unsavory tactics to preserve their careers, but now that the duo are back on track, there’s more time to focus on Burzek.
Here’s a rundown of what Ruzek and Burgess have been going through, and what fans can expect to see from their relationship for the rest of season 9.
Will Ruzek and Burgess break up on Chicago PD?
During a recent interview with TV Line, Chicago PD showrunner Gwen Sigan confirmed that the duo would be the focus of several upcoming episodes. She also suggested they would be some of the most “exciting” in the entire season.
"“They’re in such an interesting, complicated place”, Sigan noted. “They’re a makeshift family, currently platonic but there’s always that chemistry there. It’s a unique relationship with no clear boundaries. The second section of this season really explores that territory. Do they need clear boundaries? Can this family function how they want it to? What does it all mean for Makayla?”"
Ruzek and Burgess have had a tricky dynamic for most of Chicago PD, but their recent closeness seemed to be sparked at the top of the season when Burgess was shot. Ruzek stepped up to help raise Makayla, and they’ve grown increasingly uneasy with the plutonic limbo that Sigan alluded to above.
The promo for the next episode confirms this thematic focus. Burgess tells Ruzek he doesn’t want him to spend as much time as he has with Makayla, especially if he plans to pursue other women romantically.

It’s unclear based on the scant clips we’ve gotten so far, but it looks as though the two officers are going to have to arrive at some clarity regarding their relationship and the role each plays in each other’s lives.
It would definitely be a shock to see Ruzek and Burgess’ relationship come to an end, especially given the time and effort the writers have put into developing it, but it’s possible that the drama surrounding Halstead and Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) may have been a red herring for the couple with more pressing issues at hand.
We can’t wait to see what happens to our beloved Burzek when Chicago PD returns on Jan. 5.
