Nobody was ready for Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) to get married. Well, technically the couple were engaged, so it wasn’t that big a shock, but it certainly came as a surprise when they decided to get married suddenly, and in a private ceremony.

The couple tied the knot in the episode “A Way Out” without any of their friends or family being in attendance. This uppends the way that Chicago PD writers had been building up the wedding, and introduces a whole slew of questions into the mix. Do they tell the rest of the IU? Do they keep it a secret?

Here’s an explanation as to why Halstead and Upton didn’t have a big wedding.

Did Halstead and Upton get married?

Showrunner Gwen Sigan recently talked about the decision to marry off Halstead and Upton during an interview with TV Line. She asserted that the emotional buildup and payoff of the relationship was more important than a traditional, grandiose ceremony.

"“They’ve been through so much together (this season especially) and this was a completely emotional decision made inside a moment”, Sigan explained. “They wanted something good, they wanted something permanent that made all the events of the episode worthwhile, they wanted connection — and they didn’t want to wait another second.”"

The actors behind the characters, Soffer and Spiridakos, felt similarly pleased with the direction their onscreen union played out. The former reasoned that the couple didn’t need a big ceremony to affirm each other’s love, and the latter felt that the intimacy was more fitting than a blowout, season finale-type event.

With everything that’s been going on, the connection between them has been “Fractured” (see what I did there?!), and they are both desperate to get it back. Deciding to get married was spur-of-the-moment in an effort to show each other that they’ll come out of this together stronger. It’s not for anybody else, it was just for them.

"“I don’t think Hailey would [prefer a stereotypical wedding]”, Spiridakos added. “I think the attention of a big celebration would actually make her shy. Plus, that’s not really her style. I think if there was a big celebration, Voight would be invited. They’re all a big family.”"

Whether that bigger celebration will come into focus, or the newlyweds decide to keep the news under wraps remains to be seen, but it’ll certainly add a new dimension of intrigue and emotional richness to Chicago PD as it resumes its ninth season.
