Chicago Fire season 10 winter premiere won’t have time jump
Chicago Fire dropped a bombshell on viewers in the episode “Winterfest”. Not only did Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker) appoint Pelham (Brett Dalton) to the role of 51 lieutenant, but the other person in competition for the job, Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) appeared suddenly in the final moments.
As far as cliffhangers go, this one poses lots of future complications. Will Kidd’s return mean that Pelham is out of a job? What will Kidd’s frigid treatment of Severide (Taylor Kinney) mean for their relationship moving forward?
Here’s what we know about the show’s winter premiere and whether the show plans to confuse fans with any time jumps.
Will there be a time jump in Chicago Fire season 10?
The One Chicago universe has a habit of taking time jumps during season breaks, in an effort to simulate the real passage of time that the viewer experience in their own lives and to create an additional sense of drama.
That being said, there will be no time jumps when Chicago Fire returns for the season 10 winter premiere. Showrunner Derek Haas set the record straight during a recent interview with ET Online.
"“[The show] will pick up immediately after the events of [episode] No. 9” Haas confirmed. “No. 10 starts right in the aftermath of that. You’ve got a situation where it’s musical chairs [at Firehouse 51] and there’s one too many people and not enough chairs, so that’s going to come into play.”"

The showrunner rationalized the decision by pointing out that there’s so much to do with the Kidd character that jumping forward in time would be a dramatic disservice to fans. He also pointed to the decisions made by the characters in the immediate aftermath of Kidd’s return will set the tone for the rest of the season.
"“[Severide] doesn’t know quite how to react to that situation of being ignored… or abandoned for the most part, even if the reasons were good and noble”, Haas teased. “This is going to be a source of concern going into the second half of the season.”"
Given that the winter premiere will pick up the second that “Winterfest” ended, it’s safe to assume that Kidd and Severide will address their feelings regarding the last few months and the former’s baffling decision to relinquish the lieutenant role to an outsider.
Chicago Fire returns in 2022 on Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 9/8c on NBC. Catch up on the season so far on Hulu.
