Chicago Med has plenty of story arcs to resolve when it comes back in 2022. The future of the ED may be in jeopardy due to the sting operation and subsequent fallout orchestrated by Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) and Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss).

As it turns out, the current characters aren’t the only ones who are going to have to deal with the dramatic fallout. It sounds like there are going to be some unexpected returns from cast members from seasons prior.

Here’s a rundown of who’s set to return to Chicago Med and whether we can expect to see them before the end of season 7.

Which cast members are returning to Chicago Med?

Chicago Med showrunners Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider dropped some teasers during their recent interview with TV Insider. While they were purposely vague about which characters would come back, they did confirm that several faces from the past would make their way back into the ED.

They did, however, say there were plans to have “minor” crossovers between Chicago Med and the greater One Chicago universe. “So you’ll see the Fire and PD people on our show and vice versa”, Schneider added. This is certainly a pleasant surprise for fans, after they were initially told that plans for a 2021 crossover had been cancelled.

The most notable bit of information came when Frolov discussed the possibility of Yaya DaCosta returning as April Sexton. DaCosta’s exit was notably abrupt at the end of last season, and fans have been eager to see her return.

"“That isn’t to say she wouldn’t come back, couldn’t come back”, Frolov explained. “She’s healthy, she’s pursuing her degree as a nurse practitioner. So we would certainly entertain bringing her back. Everybody loves Yaya.”"

One Chicago has always done a good job of weaving characters back into the main story and giving them a good sendoff, so it would make sense to give DaCosta the additional screen time that fans have been pining for. Additionally, it would add dramatic weight to on the ongoing saga with Dr. Choi (Brian Tee) and their ongoing romance.

The showrunners clearly have some big reveals in store for Chicago Med‘s eventual return, and while the lack of detail can be frustrating, it’ll make the eventual discovery all the more exciting.
