Tracy Spiridakos reveals Upton’s views of Voight will shift in episodes ahead
Hailey Upton will never been the same. The police officer used to be optimistic and hopeful about the legal system, but her recent encounters (and decisions) have made her a bit more weary. She agreed to cover up the death of a criminal that she killed, and helped Voight (Jason Beghe) to keep the truth from the FBI.
The decision managed to keep both officers (as well as Upton’s fiance, Halstead) out of prison, so it would up being the right call from a self-preservation perspective. From a moral perspective, it’s a bit more complicated.
Here’s what you need to know about Upton and the ways in which her character has changed.
Is Upton going to be leaving Chicago PD?
During a recent interview with TV Line, actress Tracy Spiridakos discussed Upton’s thoughts on Voight and how they have changed after the coverup. She admitted that the corruption of the veteran officer has gradually worn on her and shifted her approach to policing.
"“She kind of had Voight on a pedestal for a long time and that’s definitely changed” Spiridakos stated. “The way that she views him has shifted. I think she still respects him. Like we’ve said before, the unit is a big family, but the way that she sees him has changed and I haven’t seen what’s coming up for the two of them yet. I’m interested to see how that plays out though going forward.”"
The lack of faith in the IU family has dovetailed nicely with Upton’s choice to focus on her own family. Her marriage to Halstead was held without anyone else knowing about it, and it remains to be seen whether the newlyweds will share the news with the rest of the unit.

Spiridakos threw out the possibility that Upton’s marriage will answer long-held questions about the rest of the character’s family tree. “I imagine she would have told her mom”, she added. “I think they’re close, but yeah, I would love to find out more about her family. How many siblings does Hailey have? This is a question. Does she have siblings?”
Halstead has had a similar wake up call when it comes to Voight, so it’ll be one of the dramatic pleasures of the season 9 to see how the couple both navigate their marriage and their slightly jaded outlook when it comes to their boss.
