Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) has lots of life decisions to make come the return of Chicago Fire in 2022. The character has become the anchor of the 51 now that Casey (Jesse Spencer) is gone, and he’s having a hard time acclimating to life without his longtime peer, as well as fiance Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo).

Given all the uncertainties of Severide’s story (especially after the cliffhanger return of Kidd in the mid-season finale), we thought it’d be the perfect time to reflect on the character and what to expect from him during the rest of season 10.

Here’s a rundown of what’s next for Severide on Chicago Fire.

Are Severide and Kidd going to break up?

The biggest hurdle that Severide will have to overcome is his waning relationship with Kidd. She failed to stay in touch with him while she was on the road promoting Girls on Fire, and it’s led to a disconnect between them. When Kidd returned at the end of the episode “Winterfest”, the look on Severide’s face was less excitement and more resentment at the way she had made him feel.

During a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, showrunner Derek Haas confirmed that there will be plenty of relationship problems for the couple. “There’s a lot to talk about — it’s both her place at the firehouse and her place with her relationship with him that’s going to need some major work-in-progress-type renovations”, he teased. “Major renovations.”

Haas went on to say that Severide’s struggles with communication will also rear their ugly head as season 10 progresses. “Unfortunately with Severide, communication is not his strong suit, so that’s going to come back into play”, he added. “True to his character is maybe not the best communication happening between him and Stella when she returns.”

The other big decision Severide is facing has to do with his status at the 51. Wendy Seager (Andy Allo) has made a pointed effort to enlist Severide’s talents as an arson investigator, as the veteran firefighter has shown a knack for it.

Haas has announced that Severide will partner with Seager on a few more arson cases before the end of the season, which is bound to bring the two even closer together. Their bond has some underlying romantic tension, which will only add to the drama between Severide and Kidd.

We anticipate Severide being put through the ringer, dramatically speaking, but we’re confident that the character will stick around ultimately pull through in his relationship with Kidd. There’s been so much time dedicated to their getting together that to pull the plug right before they get married would definitely shock some fans.
