Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) have gone through countless changes over the last few seasons of Chicago PD. From coworkers and lovers to fiancés and newlyweds, fans have gotten to see every aspect of their relationship.

That said, the slow burn approach may make it easy to forget when things started, and when the showrunners decided to pair the characters up. Now that they’re covertly married, we figured it’d be a perfect time to reflect on their relationship and establish a Halstead/Upton timeline.

Here’s what you need to know about the fan-favorite couple.

When did Halstead and Upton start dating?

Halstead has been a member of the IU team for all of Chicago PD‘s run. Conversely, Upton didn’t join the team until the season 4 episode “Fagin”. She quickly established herself as a capable cop, and by the time season 5 came around, she had been partnered up with Halstead.

Things were initially rocky between the partners, as Halstead was still coping with the dissolution of a previous relationship. The more time they spent together, however, the closer they became. In the season 6 episode “Reckoning”, the IU faces disbanding, and Halstead promises to transfer to wherever Upton goes.

After several interactions and instances of romantic tension throughout seasons 6 and 7, the pair give in to their feelings for one another by sharing a kiss. The kiss arrives courtesy of the season 8 episode “Tender Age”, and shortly after, in the episode “Unforgiven”, Halstead and Upton decide to spend their first night together.

What season did Halstead and Upton meet?

The romance did lead to some uncomfortable professional incidents. In the episode “Safe”, Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) is forced to consider whether Upton sided with Halstead on a case due to their burgeoning romance or due to her feeling it was the truth.

The duo’s romance reached another conflicted apex in the season 8 finale “The Other Side”. On the heels of her shooting Roy Walton (Michael Maize) in self-defense, Upton decides to propose to her boyfriend. Halstead is taken aback by the proposal, and while initially wary, he accepts and makes a formal proposal to her in the season 9 premiere.

Season 9 has not been easy on either party. Their engagement has been characterized by stress and mistrust over the fate of the Walton case, and Halstead’s career was nearly ended, even as he had nothing to do with the initial shooting. Fans theorized whether the heat from the case would result in Halstead and Upton’s engagement being broken off, but the opposite turned out to be true.

In the season 9 episode “A Way Out”, Halstead proposed that he and Upton get married instantly. The couple make love and proceed to the courthouse, where they got married in a private ceremony. The rest of the season will no doubt get into the specifics of their marriage and the decision to share the news with the rest of the IU.

Regardless of where the couple go in the future, it’s been a long and fascinating journey.
