Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) has some explaining to do. Her decision to go on the road and push her Girls on Fire program made sense, but her decision to gradually communicate less with Severide (Taylor Kinney) and failure to return the calls of her boss, Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker) felt out of character.

Kidd’s surprise return at the end of the mid-season finale, “Winterfest”, has had fans curious as to what her motives could have been. She’d been pushing for the lieutenant role and was vocal about her desire to settle down with Severide, so her backing off both is certainly going to prompt some questions.

Here’s the latest on the rumors surrounding Kidd’s character and a potential reason as to why she has behaved so abnormally.

Is Stella Kidd going to have a baby with Severide?

Some fans and publications have theorized that Kidd may in fact be pregnant. Nothing has been stated outright, but there have been some hints at clues at her mindset that could align with a pregnancy that she didn’t see coming.

In the promos for the upcoming Chicago Fire episode, Kidd confirms that she was “panicked” when she returned, and that she may have mishandled her communication with those closest to her. It doesn’t get to the heart of her panic, but it certainly hints at the possibility that something huge has changed, given Kidd’s typically unshakeable presence.

Furthermore, showrunner Derek Haas has confirmed that Kidd is facing some life-altering choices upon her return. When asked to explain what she may have been thinking, he told TV Line that her priorities have been looked at from a different perspective:

"“When you step away and you’re doing good, you can have those moments of, ‘Is this where I should be focusing? Or should I be focusing on other things, like maybe even bigger, grander things?’ So that’s part of the discussion of the upcoming [episodes].”"

Now the pregnancy theory is completely speculative, as neither the cast nor the showrunners have confirmed it, but it would a long way in explaining why Kidd has been dodging the people in her life and burying herself in her work.

It would also explain the concerned expression on her face when she lays eyes on Severide for the first time in months. Either way, there’s going to be a lot the couple are going to have to contend with.
