While Brian Tee will forever be best known to One Chicago fans for his role as Dr. Ethan Choi on Chicago Med, Tee continues to build quite an impressive resume of projects which will soon include a new Amazon Prime drama for which he’ll star alongside one of the biggest names in the industry.

We’re, of course, referring to Tee’s new drama Expats which he’s been filming in recent months between shooting new footage for the current seventh season of Chicago Med.

Wondering what you can expect from Brian Tee’s new series? Below we share everything there is to know about Expats season 1 including the show’s release date, full cast, plot information and trailer!

Expats season 1 release date

At this time, Amazon has not yet confirmed when Expats season 1 will be available to stream which seems to suggest we might not see the series debut in the near future. Considering the stacked lineup Amazon already has planned for 2022, it’s possible Expats season 1 might not drop until 2023 but we’re optimistic the show will arrive sometime in 2022.

What is Expats about?

Although Amazon has not yet released the official synopsis for Expats, the series is said to be set against the fabric of Hong Kong and will tell the story of an international community whose lives are bound together forever after a sudden family tragedy.

The series is based on Janice Y.K. Lee’s novel The Expatriates and is expected to draw inspiration from the source material. While the creative team is likely to take some creative liberties with the source material, here is how Amazon describes the book on which Expats is based via its official synopsis:

"Mercy, a young Korean American and recent Columbia graduate, is adrift, undone by a terrible incident in her recent past. Hilary, a wealthy housewife, is haunted by her struggle to have a child, something she believes could save her foundering marriage. Meanwhile, Margaret, once a happily married mother of three, questions her maternal identity in the wake of a shattering loss. As each woman struggles with her own demons, their lives collide in ways that have irreversible consequences for them all. Atmospheric, moving, and utterly compelling, The Expatriates confirms Lee as an exceptional talent and one of our keenest observers of women’s inner lives."

Expats cast

In addition to Chicago Med‘s Brian Tee, Expats stars Oscar-winner Nicole Kidman in one of the project’s lead roles as Margaret. Additional casting is still expected to be announced, but at the moment it has also been revealed that the series will also star actresses Ji-young Yoo and Sarayu Blue in the roles of Mercy and Hilary, respectively.

Who does Brian Tee play in Expats?

According to Deadline, Brian Tee will be playing Clarke in Expats, “a devoted husband (to Margaret) and father, Clarke has no desire to exchange his expat lifestyle for American suburbia until his world is upended and he is faced with an impossible choice.”
