Chicago PD season 9 won’t return until late February 2022
Chicago PD has been dishing out exciting plot developments, but it looks as though the show is going back on hiatus. The police procedural will be going off the air for the rest of January 2022 due to the scheduling of the Winter Olympics.
Between holiday scheduling, COVID delays, and the upcoming Olympics, the One Chicago faithful has had to endure several start-and-stops in terms of episode rollout. The good news is that once the shows do come back from their latest break, they will resume uninterrupted for the rest of the season.
Here’s a breakdown of Chicago PD season 9 and when its set to return.
When is Chicago PD coming back?
The 12th episode of the season, titled “To Protect”, aired on January 19, and will mark the last new episode release of the month. NBC will be airing reruns of previous season 9 episodes for the next two weeks, and then Winter Olympics will be underway.
Given the two week buffer between Chicago PD‘s latest episode and the Olympics, you might be wondering why the network doesn’t simply run out new episodes right up to the premiere of the sporting event. This is most likely due to the production being briefly put on hold over positive COVID tests.
Deadline reported that production was forced to shut down last week, following a string of COVID tests within Zone A (primary cast). This delay, coupled with the demand to finish episodes in time for the unpredictable release slate, mean that filling the two week gap would have been especially tough on the crew.

In short, the hiatus will give everyone time regroup in preparation for the home stretch of season 9. NBC employed a similar scheduling tactic the last time it hosted the Olympics in 2018. Original shows were taken off the air, and returned with brand new episodes the week after the Olympics wrapped.
There was initial uncertainty as to how long the One Chicago hiatus would last, with some even speculating that it would stretch into March, but promos for the latest episode confirmed that all three shows will be back on February 23, 2022.
