Jason Pelham (Brett Dalton) has made waves, both positive and negative, since he arrived on the scene. The veteran firefighter was a controversial hire, then a logical choice for lieutenant, then a cause for concern after a run-in with another firehouse.

All this has played out over the last several episodes of Chicago Fire, and while its been fun on its own, Pelham’s arc is even more interesting when contrasted with that of Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo). She’s been the opposite of Pelham in many ways, and his presence has led her to come to grips with her professional future.

Here’s a rundown of what to expect from Pelham and Kidd for the rest of season 10.

Is Kidd going to be promoted on Chicago Fire?

In the last two episodes, a firefighter was injured after answering a call, and she laid the blame for her injury on Pelham. While there was no proof to indict Pelham, the subsequent investigation and concern led to Pelham being relieved from his lieutenant position.

To make matters even more interesting, Kidd, who was previously Pelham’s only competitor for the job, took over in his absence. She answered few calls during her tenure as lieutenant, but was praised for her natural leadership skills. Pelham also spoke highly of her, telling her that she will be a great lieutenant if he wasn’t able to get his job back.

Pelham eventually takes the lieutenant role, with some help from Kidd, and the arc ends with the assumption that this dynamic will remain intact for the rest of the season. That’s not necessarily true, however. While showrunner Derek Haas has made it clear that he loves working with actor Brett Dalton, and that Pelham will be sticking around, that doesn’t mean he will stay in the role of lieutenant.

Now that there’s a precedent for a swap, it’s possible to see Pelham stick around as a member of the 51, albeit in a different role. The overwhelmingly positive feedback that Kidd got during her stint as lieutenant seemed to be a teaser towards something bigger– perhaps a promotion?

During a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Mayo confirmed that the character is still gunning for the lieutenant job at the end of the day. “I think that she wants to do well”, she added. “I think that that’s very important to her to do, once she steps into that position to be fully committed because that’s what that firehouse deserves.”

Pelham and Kidd aren’t going anywhere, and they have gotten closer over the course of the last few episodes. It’s tough to say what their professional dynamic will be later on, but we can say that the 51 will be in good hands regardless of who’s steering the ship.
