For having not appeared in a single frame of season 9, Roy Walton has been a major influence on Chicago Fire. The devious criminal nearly killed one of the members of the IU and his death nearly led to the arrest of three others.

With all that said, some fans may not be familiar with the character’s backstory, or how he came to be involved with Voight (Jason Beghe) and the rest of the team. Furthermore, there may some who are curious about the actor who plays Walton.

Here’s a primer on everything Roy Walton, and whether he will factor into future episodes.

Who is Roy on Chicago PD?

Walton is played by Michael Maize. The actor has been a regular on the TV circuit for the past two decades, with appearances on Charmed, CSI: NY and True Blood being among the most notable. He’s also frequented the Dick Wolf-produced universe, as he had a guest stint on a 2021 episode of FBI: Most Wanted.

Maize has also had bit parts in blockbuster films like Eagle Eye (2008), Saving Lincoln (2013) and Kiss Me, Kill Me (2015). His most notable big screen role is probably that of Daniel in the Disney sequel National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007).

The actor made his debut as Walton in the season 8 episode “The Right Thing”. He was linked via license plate to the scene of a harrowing crime, but was not properly pursued until the following episode due to disagreements between Voight and Deputy Superintendent Samantha Miller (Nicole Ari Parker).

In the episode “The Other Side”, Walton is tracked down and confronted by Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati). Unfortunately for the cop, Walton gets the upper hand and attacks her before shooting her and leaving her for dead.

Voight eventually catches up to Walton and decides to torture him, to which Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) objects, but she changes her tune when she sees Walton reach for Voight’s gun and proceeds to shoot him down.

Walton’s shadow has lingered over season 9 due to the illegal means in which he was killed. Upton and Voight agreed to cover up his death, and the FBI’s subsequent investigation put their careers in jeopardy. It’s ironic that Walton has been so crucial given that he was only in two episodes, but its a testament to the writing and the performance by Maize that it worked so well.
