Chicago Med fans have reason to rejoice. Not only has it been the only show in the One Chicago franchise to avoid COVID delays, but it was recently announced how many episodes would make up season 7.

The announcement from NBC’s head of scheduling, Steve Kern, who confirmed that Chicago Med would have a higher episode count than season 6 and would be closer in volume to seasons prior.

Here’s what you need to know about the show and its number of episodes.

How many episodes are in Chicago Med season 7?

Kern told Variety that the seventh season of Med would have 22 episodes in total. This is a sharp uptick from season 6, which only had 16 episodes due to various COVID-related complications. It’s also higher than season 5, which clocked in at only 20 episodes.

Generally, Med turns in less episodes per season that its predecessors, Chicago Fire and PD. The highest episode count was in season 2, which had 23 episodes, but the average for the show is around 20 episodes. In comparison, Fire and PD both average 22 episodes per season.

Kern went on to explain that the average timespan for a season is 35 weeks, and that reruns of old episodes accommodate the weeks in which Med doesn’t have new material. He also touched on the role that the Winter Olympics play in the One Chicago delay.

“So for the Chicago shows, we have 22 episodes”, he noted. “The season is 35 weeks. So that means there’s 12 or 13 weeks that we have to schedule either repeats or preemptions to get the shows to fit into the season. I’m more than happy to have a preemption that I know is going to do well, which is the Winter Olympics.”

Chicago Med and the rest of the One Chicago titles are slated to return on February 23. They will resume their normal time slots following the ending of the Winter Olympics, and should air with little to no interruptions or week-long breaks.
