We all liked Gabby Dawson (Monica Raymund). The character was an anchor during the first six seasons of Chicago Fire, whether it be through her relationship with Casey (Jesse Spencer) or her general interactions with the rest of the 51.

This attachment is what makes Gabby’s absence in the current seasons all the more jarring. Fans binging Chicago Fire on Peacock or watching reruns may be confused as to why she’s no longer around.

Here’s a brief rundown on Gabby and what happened to her character.

Where is Gabby Dawson on Chicago Fire?

Gabby experienced several highs and lows during season 6. She was able to bestow the rank of captain to her husband, Casey, but things took a turn for the tragic when the biological father of their foster son came around looking for custody. He eventually won custody, and Gabby and Casey were forced to give their son up.

The fallout of the custody battle was swift. Casey, who’s always pined to be a father, struggled to get over the loss in his own why. Gabby, meanwhile, decided that a change of scenery was the only way she could move on. She relocated to Puerto Rico, and determined that she wanted a divorce from Casey.

Gabby does return in the season 8 episode “Best Friend Magic”, and much to Casey’s surprise, she asks him to travel to Puerto Rico with her. Casey considers the move, but he ultimately decides to stay put in Chicago (in a neat reversal of the move he would eventually make for the Darden boys).

Gabby leaves for Puerto Rico alone, and has not appeared on Chicago Fire since. When speaking to the Chicago Tribune about her decision to leave the show, actress Monica Raymund said that she wanted to seek out a different kind of acting experience.

"“I’m not sure the exact moment when it happened, but I knew that my six-year contract was coming to an end and I felt like I was hungry to explore a different role, a different story”, she added. “I wanted to explore a different world.”"

While Raymund left the door open to return in another cameo, there have been no formal plans to have her character return to Chicago Fire.
