Chicago Fire is back! After a multiple-week hiatus, everyone’s favorite firefighting show has returned with lots of drama. There’s romantic developments, broken hearts, and an investigation that brings Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Seager (Andy Allo) together.

There’s also some intriguing dynamic developing between Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) and Pelham (Brett Dalton), and the ongoing debate over who should take over the lieutenant role for good in the 51. While Pelham has the role on a technicality, there’s still buzz that Kidd could step in and take it over.

Be warned that the rest of the post contains detailed spoilers for the latest episode of Chicago Fire!

What happened on Chicago Fire last night? (February 23rd)

“Fire Cop” opens with a shocking confirmation of something that was teased in the last episode, which is the romance between Violet (Hanako Greensmith) and Chief Hawkins (Jimmy Nicholas). Violet wakes up in Hawkins’ bed, and hurries to get dressed and leave before he wakes up.

Hawkins catches her, however, and quells her concern that getting involved isn’t going to be as dangerous for their careers as she thinks. Violet carries the secret of their one night stand for the rest of the episode, but her change in attitude manages to leave an impression on a lovelorn Gallo (Alberto Rosende).

Gallo is so preoccupied with his feelings for Violet that he nearly gets himself killed during a house fire rescue. He escapes in the nick of time, but his dazed body language is such that Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker) asks around to make sure he’s ok.

Gallo then confronts Violet about her feelings for Hawkins, and while he doesn’t have proof they hooked up, his hunch proves correct and he warns her that getting caught with a superior could hurt her career. She tells him off and later chooses not to sit with him in the lunch room. In was a tough episode for Gallo on the whole. Violet, on the other hand, is crushing big time on Hawkins.

The aforementioned fire is what initiates one of the other subplots in the episode, which involves Severide looking into the case and being convinced that it wasn’t a case of arson. He decides to partner up with Lt. Seager in an effort to prove that it was an accident, and he does just that, once again proving his talent for investigation.

Then there’s Kidd, who is continuing to pour her efforts into the Girls on Fire program. She is happy with the progress that students like Kylie Estevez have made, but the latter takes her aside and tells her that it might be time to start looking at her career. Kylie urges Kidd to reconsider her desire to become lieutenant, and offers to run the Girls on Fire program in her absence.

The episode ends on a somewhat vague note, but given the hints and production stills that have been floating around the internet, it seems as though Kidd is going to take up the offer.
