The new episode of Chicago PD was no laughing matter. After the dire issues that Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) had to contend with last week, the show managed to top itself and tug at the heart strings of fans.

The episode “Blood Relation” deals with the custody battle for Makayla. Her paternal uncle re-entered the picture a few weeks back, and is now demanding that he be given full custody over her adopted mother, Burgess (Marina Squerciati).

Be warned that the rest of the post contains detailed spoilers for the latest episode of Chicago PD!

What happened on Chicago PD last night? (March 2nd)

Makayla’s uncle, Theo claims that he got his life together after spending six months in prison, and he claims that the little girl should be with biological father. He also claims that Burgess is an unfit guardian because of her race.

The claim nags at Burgess, especially in the following scene, where she struggles to help Makayla with her braids. Due to her inexperience with African American hair, she rings up Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins and asks for help. Fortunately, Atwater’s aunt was able to help Makayla before she went out.

Burgess voices her concerns to Atwater, considering the idea that maybe she should not be raising Makayla as a white woman in Chicago. Atwater rebukes her concerns, though, and states that she is a good parental figure.

Despite the boost in confidence, Burgess’ luck in court doesn’t improve. Theo cleverly references the incident where Burgess was shot and nearly lost her life, and the level of trauma that came with these injuries is seen unfavorably by the court. When she finally takes the stand, she cops to being imperfect, but points out smaller things like Makayla’s favorite snacks or her like for walks on the beach.

It was the emotional apex of the show, and the big fear was that the court wouldn’t go for it. Thankfully, they prioritize the bond between guardian and child above all else, and rule that Burgess be allowed to keep custody over Makayla. It’s a truly victorious moment for the pair. Ruzek (Patrick Flueger) is visibly overwhelmed by the news.

Whatever happiness the cops have is immediately squashed the moment they arrive home. They open the door to discover Makayla’s babysitter, Gabby, laying on the floor and bleeding. The sitter tells them that “they took her” in reference to Makayla. There’s no more context for what’s going on, and before we can get our bearings as a viewer, the episode ends.

It’s a truly shocking end to an otherwise grounded, emotional episode. We can’t wait to see where it goes next, and how (if it all) it ties to the court case involving Makayla.
