Chicago Fire is entering a new era. After last week saw the exit of Jason Pelham (Brett Dalton), this week’s episode will see Firehouse 51 adjust to life under its new lieutenant, Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo). Expectations are high for Kidd, especially given that she’s been coveting the gig for a long time.

In addition to proving herself, Kidd is forced to find a new replacement for truck 81. There’s lots at stake for her character, and the episode, titled “The Missing Piece”, did not disappoint. It gave fans plenty of development and fire-based action.

What happened on Chicago Fire last night? (March 9th)

The episode opens with Kidd reflecting on her new position. She vents to Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker) about being nervous, and the desire to look to him for advice. Boden assures her that she’s right for lieutenant, and tells her to trust her gut just as the 51 gets a call. Showtime.

The 51 gets called to a burning building, and are informed that an arson investigator was injured in an attempt to locate the origin of the flame. The investigator turns out to be none other than Lt. Seager (Andy Allo). The news catches Kidd off guard, but it has an even bigger effect on Severide (Taylor Kinney), given how close he and Seager have gotten this season.

Determined to figure out how and why Seager was injured, Severide taps into his natural skill as an investigator and sets about solving the arson case. Seager joins Severide once she’s back on her feet, and together they are able to determine that the fire was intentionally set.

Elsewhere in the episode, Kidd looks for replacements. There are several candidates who appear throughout, but she ultimately decides to go with Mason (Chris Mansa), despite his criminal record and seeming lack of qualifications as a “perfect candidate”. She’s impressed with his honesty, and decides that he’s the “missing piece” the episode refers to.

The other big shoe that drops in “The Missing Piece” is the suggestion that Brett (Kara Killmer) may be taking a hiatus from work. She breaks down to Kidd and admits that she’s been having a difficult time since Casey (Jesse Spencer) left for Portland. She tells Violet (Hanako Greensmith) that she plans to go visit Casy pretty soon…

It’s a definite tease of things to come, and it sets up a nice parallel between Kidd and Brett. While the former is settling into her life, the latter is unsure as she’s ever been about her future. We can’t wait to see where things will go in the next few weeks!
