Chicago PD has had a drama-filled season 10, but somehow the cast and crew managed to raise the stakes. The latest episode, “An Officer with Grit” featured some particularly surprising and satisfying developments.

The synopsis for the episode hinted at a subplot involving Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) and her desire to become a lieutenant, though it was unclear whether she would go elsewhere for the promotion or try to take the job from Pelham (Brett Dalton), who she respects.

Be warned that the rest of the post contains detailed spoilers for the latest episode of Chicago Fire!

What happened on Chicago Fire last night? (March 2nd)

The episode kicks off with a call to a car accident. Severide (Taylor Kinney) tries to propel down to rescue the victims of the accident, as they are hanging over a bridge, but there’s technical hiccup and Severide has a close call. Eventually, Kidd is brought in to complete the rescue.

Eventually, Kidd is told that lieutenant from another fire station is leaving, and his position will need to be filled. She sees this as a chance to rise up the ranks, even though Firehouse 72 is a mostly reckless and undisciplined bunch. If someone is going to whip them into shape, why not her?

Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker) lets Kidd know that the job is hers if she wants. The only real issue is that a different firehouse means different shifts, which means she will get to spend less time with Severide. It’s a discussion the couple have, and Severide, to his credit, offers his support for whatever decision she makes.

Secondary characters are seen in the midst of mistakes. Violet (Hanako Greensmith) puts in a request to fix the broken heater on the ambulance she shares with Brett (Kara Killmer), and because of her romance with Hawkins (Jimmy Nicholas), the issue gets fixed right away. It later comes out that Violet was prioritized over a pair of firefighters who needed their truck repaired, and Brett warns her that it may come off as special treatment when she and Hawkins make their relationship official.

Gallo (Alberto Rosende) also tries to get the jump on a class by name-dropping Severide, and not only does it not work, but Severide catches wind of this and chews Gallo out. The character has a moment of self-awareness, and apologizes for the callous behavior. He also tracks Violet down and apologizes to her for things he said in the previous episode. They reconcile.

As for the big story involving Kidd, the show hits upon an ingenious solution. It turns out that Lt. Pelham is going to take the position at firehouse 72, so that Kidd can stay close to her fiance and keep the same hours. It’s a selfless decision on Pelham’s part, and a nice way to send the guy off without having to resort to extreme plot developments like death or disgrace.

Hopefully Pelham can make a cameo at some point in the future. As it stands, Kidd is the new 51 lieutenant.
