Tensions couldn’t be higher. The last episode of Chicago PD dropped a bombshell on both the fans and Burgess (Marina Squierciati), when it was revealed that her daughter Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams) was kidnapped.

This week’s episode, titled “Gone”, dealt with the trauma of this incident, as well as the desperate search to get Makayla back. It’s Burgess’ most taxing episode of the season, and that’s saying a lot for a character who was shot and nearly killed in the premiere.

Be warned that the rest of the post contains detailed spoilers for the latest episode of Chicago PD!

What happened on Chicago PD last night? (March 9th)

The episode picks up right where the last one left off, as Burgess and Ruzek (Patrick Flueger) scramble to find clues about Makayla’s disappearance. They discover a needle in her bed, which suggests that she was drugged by whoever took her. The duo managed to trace the lead to the security footage, which shows two men masquerading as pizza delivery workers.

The most obvious candidate for the kidnapping was Makayla’s uncle Theo, who had just tried to win custody of her in court. Ruzek wastes no time being forceful with Theo and he drags the man from his home in handcuffs. Once in the interrogating room, Ruzek turns up the heat, threatening to kill Theo if any harm comes to Makayla.

Fortunately, Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) is on hand to both restrain Ruzek and connect the dots to a startling discovery: Theo was being blackmailed to pay the kidnappers. As it turns out, the men responsible were demanding Theo pay $1 million for Makayla’s return, and that he not get police involved.

Do Ruzek and Burgess get Makayla back on Chicago PD?

Voight (Jason Beghe) takes somewhat of a backseat during the episode, but he does check Ruzek on his angry behavior. He tells him that there’s no room for antics like that on his team, and that he’ll pull both Ruzek and Burgess from the case if it happens again. Ruzek begrudgingly agrees.

The team follow the trail to Nia, a woman who helped Makayla’s biological father murder her family. Nia still holds a grudge against Burgess for being finessed on the plea deal, and she insults the cop to her face, causing Ruzek to once again lose control. Voight warns him a second time, and Burgess tries to calm him down.

Ultimately, Theo has no choice but to join forces with Ruzek and Burgess. They walk him through the ransom drop, but things don’t go according to plan, leading him to receive different demands from Ruzek (who says not to hand off the money) and Burgess (who says hand off the money). Theo goes with the latter, leading to a foot chase with the people who collected.

Ruzek and Burgess are able to track the culprits to a nearby junkyard, where they discover an unconscious Makayla in the backseat of a car. Despite some initial terror, the little girl wakes up, and appears to be unharmed.

The episode ends with Burgess reading a bedtime story to Makayla while Ruzek watches the both of them. There appears to be a family moment for all three of them, with Burgess taking Ruzek by the hand, but the latter lets go and walks away.

There was loads of tension throughout the episode, but what may have surprised some fans was how much dissent there was between Ruzek and Burgess. They disagreed repeatedly on how to find Makayla, and this could lead to some problems for the prospective couple down the line.
