Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram) is back. After several years away, the character has been hired to work for Gaffney Medical Center under the supervision of Dr. Goodwin (S. Empatha Merkerson). Longtime fans were shocked, newcomers may have been confused. Who’s Hannah?

Well, Hannah is a doctor with a checkered history. She previously worked for Gaffney, but her personal vices led to her leaving both the job and the city of Chicago.

Here’s what you need to know about the character and the reason she left the first place.

Why did Hannah get fired on Chicago Med?

Hannah was introduced in the season 5 episode “Leave the Choice to Solomon”. She appeared to be an affable and talented obstetrician-gynecologist, but her chipper exterior was merely a cover for a darker personality. As Dr. Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) quickly discovers, Hannah is addicted to heroin.

Hannah and Halstead are at each other’s throats for much of the former’s stint on the show, with each threatening to expose the other for their unethical deeds (Hannah’s addiction, Halstead’s odd treatment tactics). The volatility of their relationship eventually boils over into romance, however, with Halstead determined to help Hannah kick her habit.

Sadly, it doesn’t take. Halstead felt that Hannah was using their romance as a substitute for her heroin addiction, and taking it to unhealthy levels of obsession. After a nasty fight in the season 6 episode “When Did We Begin to Change?”, Hannah relapsed and overdosed. Halstead broke things off with her and insisted she get help. When the character decided to leave town for a fresh start, it seemed as though we’d seen the last of her.

But now she’s back. She’s managed to convince Goodwin and Dr. Archer (Steven Weber) that she’s ready to treat patients again, as she’s been sober for two years. The former is happy with what she sees and decides to welcome her back.

Hannah has had a wildly unpredictable story arc, so it’ll be fascinating to see how she handles this second chance. It’ll also be fun to see the dynamic with Halstead, given their past romance and the possible triangle that could develop between them and Dr. Hammer (Kristen Hager).
