Anna Avalos (Carmela Zumbado) has been one of the most interesting characters to come along in Chicago PD season 9. Her past is littered with tragedy, but her no-nonsense approach to the crime world has made her a valuable asset to the IU.

This approach has also endeared Avalos to Hank Voight (Jason Beghe), who has quickly bonded with her and developed a friendship that has some of the other IU members confused.

The nature of their bond may be unclear so far, but showrunner Gwen Sigan has confirmed that we will get more information on the duo come the season 9 finale. Here’s what you need to know:

What happened to Anna Avalos on Chicago PD?

Sigan told TV Line that Avalos will play a crucial role in the last leg of the Chicago PD season 9.

“We will definitely see more. You’ll see [Anna] in the penultimate episode, and you will see her in the final episode as well”, the showrunner revealed. “It’s been so fun to write for Jason [Beghe] with [Carmela Zumbado], and so that connection will continue, [and we’ll see] it grow.”

Sigan went on to stress the importance of Avalos as a presence in Voight’s life. She even went as far as to liken their bond to the one between Voight and Olinsky (Elias Koteas), a beloved character in One Chicago history. “[Anna has] gotten under Voight’s skin a little bit”, the showrunner teased. “He hasn’t really let anybody in in a long time, probably since Olinsky”.

This sets up some fascinating possibilities for both characters moving forward. The last time fans saw Avalos, she was going undercover with the merciless drug dealer Escano (Jose Zuniga), which took a dark turn when it was revealed that Escano was aware of her ulterior motives.

It’s likely that Escano will serve as the main antagonist for the season 9 finale, given how much Sigan has stressed the importance of Avalos. This is especially the case given that Escano has yet to be brought to justice. We’d be shocked if Voight didn’t do everything in his power to right that wrong.
