Dr. Stevie Hammer (Kristen Hager) has established herself as a major presence on Chicago Med. She was a worthy foil to Dr. Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) and her dynamic with her mother proved to be one of the most compelling arcs of season 7.

That being said, Hammer is gone. The character has decided to take some time away from work to visit her estranged husband, and the show didn’t make it clear when she would return.

Here’s what we know about the character and what the future holds for her.

Is Dr. Hammer leaving Chicago Med?

Chicago Med showrunners Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider discussed Hammer during a recent interview with Variety. They said that while there are plans to keep the door open, there aren’t any concrete storylines for her to return in the immediate future.

“She’s a wonderful actor”, Scheider stated. “We felt we had pretty much done her story regarding her mom and resolved that, but we’d love to have her back,” Schneider said. “And the great thing about the One Chicago series is if the character’s alive, the character can come back.”

The actress who plays Hammer, Kristen Hager, recently announced her pregnancy on social media, so it makes sense that she would want to take time away from the show’s production. Frolov said that the timing of everything worked tremendously well, given that Hammer’s next character arc (reconnecting with her husband) will play out offscreen.

“What’s happening with Stevie right now is she’s going back to try and reconnect with her husband and make that work”, she added. “So we’re leaving that up in the air. Does that in fact happen? She is a character that has the potential to return.”

It would be interesting to see Hammer come back, even if it is a cameo capacity. While her arc with her mother was resolved, it feels like there’s still some things to be sorted out with Halstead, since they grew so close over the first half of the season.

As the showrunners stated, however, Med has always been good for return arcs (we recently saw the return of Hannah Asher), so we are hopeful that Hammer will step foot in the ED once again.
