Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Ruzek (Patrick Fleuger) have had a particularly rough time during the last few episodes of Chicago PD. They’ve had to deal with a custody battle for their adopted daughter Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams), and the kidnapping that followed.

The duo were able to get Makayla back, but the differing methods on how they went about the investigation added to the already tense dynamic getting worse. This tension ran throughout the episode “Adrift”, which saw Ruzek take on a kidnapping case that hit eerily close to home.

Here’s what happened and how it affected Burgess and Ruzek’s relationship.

Did Burgess and Ruzek break up on Chicago PD?

Ruzek was able to recover the missing person in the case, but his return home at the end of the episode did not bode well for his future with Burgess. Both people acknowledged that things have been difficult since Makayla’s kidnapping, and Burgess went as far as to say that it was easier to parent when Ruzek was busy with undercover work.

The admission hurts Ruzek, but his priority is Makayla at the end of the day, and he tells Burgess that he will take some time away from the both of them. The episode ends with him gathering his belongings and retreating the the rundown apartment he stayed in during his undercover mission.

While Burgess and Ruzek haven’t dated throughout season 9, the exes have remained close and have functioned as parents to Makayla. The decision made at the end of “Adrift” is a major change for the pair, as they will interact strictly through professional means.

PD showrunner Gwen Sigan discussed the change during a recent interview with TV Line. “We will continue to play with that for the rest of the season”, she explained. “You’ll see them deal with that new dynamic and navigate that new space and see if it is better for Makayla or isn’t, and how they react to it as well. We’ll definitely explore it some more.”

While Patrick Fleuger previously theorized that Burgess and Ruzek will end up together in the end, this decision is a setback that will reverberate throughout the rest of season 9. Their dynamic will inevitably play a part in the finale, which airs May 25.
