A new era is about to begin on FBI: Most Wanted as the CBS procedural prepares to welcome Dylan McDermott to its cast as the team’s new leader.

For One Chicago fans who haven’t been keeping up with the FBI offshoot, McDermott was tapped to join the FBI: Most Wanted cast following the departure of original cast member Julian McMahon, who left the series after three seasons as FBI Agent Jess LaCroix.

In the series, McDermott will play Special Agent Remy Scott, the charming but formidable agent who is tasked with the difficult job of taking over the reins of the team following LaCroix’s untimely death.

While there is a lot of curiosity among audiences to see how his character will fit in with the existing team, there has also been a lot of hesitation among fans of the Dick Wolf franchise due to the fact that McDermott’s role on FBI: Most Wanted comes on the heels of his role as Law and Order: Organized Crime villain Richard M. Wheatley.

Dylan McDermott on moving from Law & Order to FBI

For many fans, it’s been hard to try wrapping their heads around the idea of McDermott jumping from one Dick Wolf franchise to another in such a short window of time. Viewers have vocally expressed concerns with McDermott going from playing a character who is one of the best bad guys on-screen in the Law and Order franchise to playing one of the good guys in the FBI franchise, and McDermott has been paying attention. Not only has been paying attention to what the internet has had to say, but he’s relishing in it!

"“I think it’s really an interesting process,” McDermitt acknowledged of making the transition from one Dick Wolf franchise to another during a recent call with reporters. “I’ve been reading comments online and stuff like that, and people are saying, ‘It’s too soon. He’s Richard Wheatley. He’s a bad guy.’ All these comments about that. And I relish in it because I think it’s amazing that people actually believe that’s the character that I play, I’m him.”"

For McDermott, it was the chance to play someone completely from the character he helped bring to life on Law and Order: Organized Crime that drew him to the role. Or as McDermott put it, “it was time to play someone good again.

"“These are wildly different people and wildly different agendas in life. And I knew instinctively that I had been playing some questionable people along the way, and now it was time to play someone good again. And Remy Scott is that character.”"

It doesn’t hurt that when we meet McDermott’s FBI: Most Wanted, it’s already a fully realized character who wastes no time in jumping into action. In fact, McDermott is confident fans will be asking Richard Wheatley who by the episode’s end.

"“I mean this is a character that’s fully realized when we meet him. You see this guy drive up, and he’s in action right away. We’re in a case right away, and you’re gonna see so many different facets of this guy that I think you’re gonna quickly forget about Richard Wheatley by the end of episode 17.  I think you’re gonna be like, ‘This is Remy Scott.'”"

Don’t miss Dylan McDermott’s debut as Special Agent Remy Scott on FBI: Most Wanted tonight at 10/9c on CBS!
