Emma Jacobs (Caitlin Carver) has made quite the impression in her first couple Chicago Fire episodes. She’s proven herself to be a unique medic, given her blunt bedside manner and propensity for saying exactly what she feels to her co-workers.

Jacobs has passed off some of her traits as being the result of her past training, which everyone rolled with. At least, initially. In the latest episode of Chicago Fire, someone discovered that there may be more to Jacobs’ story than meets the eye.

Here’s what you need to know about Jacobs and her mysterious past.

The episode “What’s Inside You” may have focused on Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker), but it did have some time to develop Jacobs. The medic revealed that Brett (Sylvie Brett) will be back in a month, and that Boden offered to help her find a permanent spot at a different firehouse when that happens.

It makes sense, given that Jacobs has an impressive resume. She told Violet (Hanako Greensmith) that she spent time as a pre-med student before she decided to become a medic, which explains her impressive skillset. However, not all of her co-workers bought her story. Ritter (Daniel Kyri) decided to look into Jacobs’ past during the episode.

Sure enough, there was dirt. Ritter took Gallo (Alberto Rosende) aside and shared the big secret of the episode: Jacobs is lying about her pre-med credentials. “I called admissions at Johns Hopkins, asked about Emma Jacobs… Had a hunch”, Ritter explained. “She never attended that school… I’m telling you, there’s something off about her.”

While the lie is definitely a red flag, the bigger concern is that if Jacobs is lying about her studies, she could be lying about anything. Someone willing to bend the truth that far to get a job can be dangerous, especially when it comes to treating people and being honest with them when it comes to what’s needed.

We have a month before Brett’s return, which means we will hopefully get more insight into the character and why she lied about her pre-med stint. It’ll be intriguing to see whether she can get past this lie, and if the rest of the 51 will be able to accept her despite her deception.
