Chicago Fire has kept fans on their toes. Brett (Kara Killmer) took off to spend time with Casey (Jesse Spencer), and her departure played out so quickly that it was almost jarring. There was no word on when she would return, or if she would be returning single, so we had to sit and wait for word on the future of two of the show’s most beloved characters.

Fortunately, the show has provided us with a little bit of context. While the episode “What’s Inside You” focused squarely on Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker), it did give us a timetable on when we can expect to see Brett back at the 51.

Here’s what you need to know about her eventual return.

Did Kara Killmer leave Chicago Fire?

It’s revealed through dialogue that Brett will be back in one month. This means her replacement, the mysterious Emma Jacobs (Caitlin Carver), will have to figure out another fire station to work at once she’s fulfilled her duties. The discussion over her future also leads to a shocking discovery about her past.

We digress. Brett’s return being set at a month in One Chicago time lines up pretty closely with the planned release date for the season finale: May 25th. While it might technically be longer than a month for us, the inclusion of reruns and weeks without new episodes evens out the score.

This schedule also coincides with the theory that Brett will be returning with Casey in tow. Fire showrunner Derek Haas has spoken at length about his desire to bring both characters back for the finale, going as far as to say that he’ll do what it takes to get it done.

Fortunately, it seems as though everything is running smoothly behind the scenes. Haas told Looper that things are “looking good” for the characters’ planned return.

"“I never, never want to promise anything until cameras are rolling, because I’ve seen enough things go south”, he added. “But it is our great expectation that we will see both Casey and Brett in the finale because giant, big, exciting things are going to be happening. I’ll go ahead and say it: This will be the best finale ever.”"

We cannot wait to see Brett return, and to get a proper Brettsey finale.
