Chicago PD spoilers: What happened in season 9 episode 19?
Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) has been worn down in Chicago PD season 9. The character has been forced to reckon with corruption within the department, and his decision to keep his living a secret led to his relationship falling apart.
After taking a backseat during the last few episodes, Atwater is back in the spotlight. He’s taking on a case involving a random murder, and the mysterious circumstances surrounding it. There’s a definite effort on the part of the show to provide a breather from the Burzek plot, and the Voight and Avalos plot that’s seemingly coming back in the finale.
Be warned that the rest of the post contains detailed spoilers for the latest episode of Chicago PD!
What happened on Chicago PD last night? (April 20th)
The episode starts with Atwater stumbling upon a police call. There are officers banging on the door of a nearby apartment, and when they get inside they discover a dead man and a woman who was shot and bleeding out. They rush the latter to the hospital and learn that her name is Raquel and that she was the victim of a ransacking.
She claimed that two men beat her husband to death, and that she hid out after being shot, in an attempt to survive the attack. Everything seems to check out, and Atwater is on hand to comfort Raquel as she copes with her guilt. She said that she should’ve tried to protect her husband, and Atwater assures her that there was nothing she could have done.
As the case wears on, however, things become more fishy. There are two more attacks with the same M.O. and the IU look into possible connections. Voight (Jason Beghe) eventually determines that Raquel is the connecting link between all three attacks. It turns out that she was married to the first man and her interior company was hired to work on the other two homes that were hit. The unit were initially stumped as to how the suspects had the security codes to get in.

The unit then discovers that Raquel is not her real name, and that she has a collection of fake ID’s and passports. It’s looking like she was responsible for the crimes, at least partially, but a lengthy interrogation reveals the truth: Raquel has an abusive ex-boyfriend, and his constant pursuit of her has led her to change her identity multiple times.
In the end, Atwater determines that the ex-boyfriend stalked Raquel and intimated her into giving up the security codes to the various houses. As for the murder, well, he was going to take out any man who took away the woman he psychotically thought was his.
Thanks to Atwater and the rest of the unit, Raquel is free to pursue her life without having to worry about her ex stalking her.
