Jesse Spencer is returning to Chicago Fire (but don’t get too excited)
It’s happening! After weeks of speculation, Chicago Fire has confirmed that Jesse Spencer will be returning to the show as beloved firefighter Casey. The announcement was made by showrunner Derek Haas, who had been vocal in his desire to get Casey back, albeit briefly, for the season 10 finale.
This is a big perk for the show, given the way the second half of the season has been structured. Brett (Kara Killmer) has struggled to get over Casey’s departure, and the character’s decision to take time off to visit him added more importance to his possible return.
That said, there are some strings attached to this announcement. Here’s what you need to know about Jesse Spencer’s upcoming stint on Chicago Fire.
Haas told Deadline that he had stayed in touch with Spencer since the actor’s mid-season exit, and made a point of finding the right storyline to bring him back. The story turned out to be the upcoming wedding between Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo).
"“The juicy details are that we went to him and said, ‘You’re so loved on this show. And with the Severide wedding coming up, there’s no way Casey would miss seeing his best friend getting married. Come on, man!’ So, he graciously agreed to come back for the finale”, Haas revealed."
There are several reasons why the homecoming is perfect. For one, Casey promised Severide that he would be his best man, and as the showrunner pointed out, Casey is a “man of his word”. Then there’s the rectifying of the Casey and Kidd dynamic, since the latter was absent when Casey left the show. They will finally get a chance to have a proper goodbye.

Which brings us to the slight downside of the announcement…
It will be an absolute joy to see Casey back in action, but the homecoming is not going to be long. Haas told the outlet that the character is still committed to raising the Darden boys in Oregon, and has no plans of cutting his commitment short.
“That’s a three-year commitment he made when he left this season”, Haas restated. “He’s not coming back permanently to 51 anytime soon.” So while his return may be brief, it’s a relief to know that Spencer is still in the mix, and willing to collaborate in such a way that Casey never strays too far. We can’t wait to see him again.
