Dr. Elsa Curry (Molly Bernard) is an interesting character in Chicago Med history. The character appeared, suddenly, during season 4, and quickly developed an interesting dynamic with Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss).

As the show wore on, however, the plan for Dr. Curry’s character became less and less clear. What did Med originally plan to do with her? What happened? Well, here’s a rundown of the last time we saw her.

Why did Dr. Curry leave Chicago Med?

Dr. Curry was introduced in the season 4 episode “Be My Better Half”. She’s a third-year medical student who gets assigned to shadow Dr. Halstead and Dr. Manning (Torrey DeVitto) during their respective shifts. She proves herself an adept student, but when she’s forced to comfort a mother who lost her daughter during childbirth, she breaks down.

She gets comforted by Dr. Halstead during off hours, but Curry mistakes the professional kinship for romantic interest, and begins to develop a crush on Halstead during season 5. This one-sided romance reaches a breaking point in the episode “Too Close to the Sun”.

Curry approaches Halstead and asks him on a date, but their possible plans get interrupted by an emergency situation. Curry questions Halstead’s methods during this situation, but the latter goes with his gut and turns out to be right. Curry apologizes for her concern, and tries once more to ask Halstead out, but she backs out when she discovers that the doctor already had plans with another woman.

Curry sort of disappears from the show after that. She’s rarely, if ever mentioned after that, and she never appears at Gaffney following the episode. It’s an odd occurrence, as most of the Med characters are at least given a reason as to why they leave. We’re left to assume that she was transferred to another hospital.

Admittedly, Curry was never a main character, and was present as a means of fleshing out already established staff members, but the oversight is strange. We’d say there’s a chance she could make a return to the ED, but the chances are slim.
