Chicago Fire dished out some fascinating stories this week. The episode before a season finale always has a lot to do, both in terms of wrapping up secondary stories and setting the stage for the big blow out episode.

The latest, titled “Last Chance”, managed to do both extremely well. It gave fans a well-contained episode, while at the same time providing insight into struggles and subplots that have teased for the bulk of season 10.

Be warned that the rest of the post contains detailed spoilers for the latest episode of Chicago Fire!

What happened on Chicago Fire last night? (May 18th)

Things are tense between Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo). There’s no two ways about it. The former is angry that he feels he has to give in to resolve every argument, and the latter is frustrated that Severide considers her someone who doesn’t meet him halfway.

The tension is palpable as they answer a call. It turns out a food truck collided with a regular call, and the driver of the food truck refused to get treated. This frustrated Violet (Hanako Greensmith), who has been on edge ever since she caught on that Emma Jacobs (Caitlin Carver) is trying to take her job.

Chief Hawkins (Jimmy Nicholas), who was blackmailed by Jacobs last episode, is not going to take things lying down. He confides in Gallo (Alberto Rosende), telling him that he plans to travel to the location of Jacobs’ previous job to check on some shady work references. Gallo volunteers to head down there in Hawkins’ place, and what he finds is… interesting.

Gallo is told that Jacobs’ former co-workers couldn’t say anything about her, but there was some strange behavior when he brought up the notion of her using blackmail to advance. He didn’t get anything concrete during his visit, but the body language of the firefighters suggest that Jacobs has been trouble for just about everyone.

Jacobs decides to pull rank on the next call she and Violet receive, and the latter is rightfully angry. Then, in a split second reaction, Violet pushes Jacobs out of the way of a car, saving her life. It’s so surprising that Jacobs even drops her facade for a moment and thanks her.

Severide’s luck isn’t much better. He tries to help the driver of the aforementioned food truck, but it turns out that the propane tank on the truck didn’t hold gas, it held drugs. Severide gets the man busted, but on his way home, the man’s friends take him into an alley and beat him up as revenge for their lost investment.

The silver lining that comes out of this beating is that Severide and Kidd drop their angry pretense and voice their love for one another. Things seem to be on an upswing as their wedding looms. In an eerie reminder of conflicts to come, however, Jacobs closes out the episode with an ultimatum for Hawkins: fire Violet, and do it soon.
