Chicago PD: LaRoyce Hawkins teases ‘high stakes’ finale
Chicago PD has some big storylines to resolve in the season 9 finale. There’s the rush to arrest Javier Escano (Jose Zuniga) after his string of crimes, the desperate need to find out what went down with Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), and, of course, the desire to find out what the dynamic is between Voight (Jason Beghe) and Anna Avalos (Carmela Zumbado).
The third of these subplots has been teased by PD showrunners, but it wan’t evident just how fractured the dynamic between Voight and Avalos is until the episode “House of Cards” aired. Voight decided to withhold crucial information about Avalos’ past, and the decision put him at odds with her and the rest of the IU.
LaRoyce Hawkins, who plays Atwater, shed some light on the current state of the IU and what fans can expect in the finale.

Hawkins told Cinemablend that Voight’s decision led the rest of team to reconsider his position as leader. He also noted that Voight’s general approach to working cases is to keep a distance, which he’s failed to do here.
"“We’re watching Voight be extremely invested in a case and in a C.I. More invested than we’ve seen him in a while”, the actor noted. “So naturally for us, the stakes are raised because we’re watching our sergeant dig deeper… And now we watch him be a little bit more flustered and probably not as sure of himself as we’re used to.”"
The use of the word “flustered” is especially telling, given Voight’s reputation for being stern and unshakeable. It’ll be fascinating to watch the season 9 finale unfold, knowing that whatever bad things may occur will be caused by Voight’s tactical decision.

Hawkins went on to confirm that the finale will be one of the most exciting the show has seen yet, and that fans will not be prepared for the level of drama that will be presented. “They’re extremely high. They’re extremely high right now”, he said, when asked to quantify the dramatic stakes that each character is dealing with.
The actor played things close to his chest when it came to spoilers, but what we do know from clips and showrunner interviews is that the finale will focus on Voight and Avalos, and their now fractured relationship.
