Chicago PD season 10: Will Carmela Zumbado return as Anna Avalos?
It’s impossible to overstate the importance of Anna Avalos when it comes to Chicago PD season 9. The character was the at the heart of the season’s main conflict, and the bond she developed with Voight (Jason Beghe) was one of the most unexpected and tragic in the show’s history.
Of course, the tragedy came into play when Avalos was shot and killed and shooting and nearly killing Voight in the season finale. Are we going to be seeing more of the character in season 10? Could flashbacks and/or recollections by Voight mean that she’s returning?
Here’s what you need to know about Avalos and the actor who plays her, Carmela Zumbado.
How did Anna Avalos die on Chicago PD?
The season 9 finale was surprisingly swift in terms of the body count. An explosion nearly killed Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), and the man behind the explosion, Escano (Jose Zuniga), was killed by Avalos offscreen. Then, of course, all plots converged in the climax, where Upton shot an armed Avalos in an attempt to secure Voight’s safety.
The IU tried to rush Avalos to the hospital in an effort to save her, but it proved futile. She was pronounced dead on arrival, bringing an end to the sting operation that was initially intended to put Escano behind bars.
Based on the way that PD handles characters who die, we will not be seeing Avalos return in season 11. Chicago Fire has doled out the occasional flashback, like when Andy Darden ( was brought back in a season 3 episode despite being killed in the pilot, but PD has never been as sentimental. When someone dies, they are gone for good.

Of course, Avalos’ presence will still be felt throughout season 10. The character was able to get close to Voight in a way that few have been able to since the death of his best friend, Olinksy (Elias Koteas), and he’s going to have to sort through the complicated feelings he has towards her if he’s going to be able to continue being on the job.
Voight made some questionable judgement calls when it came to keeping Avalos undercover, and these calls went a long way in making her lash out. It’s possible that things would have turned out differently had he been more upfront with her, and that’s a realization that he will have to deal with moving forward.
Avalos will not be seen in the next season of Chicago PD, but her untimely death ensures that she will be felt.
