Gallo (Alberto Rosende) had a rough week on Chicago Fire. The character was already getting over the fact that he still has feelings for Violet (Hanako Greensmith), despite supporting her romance with Hawkins (Jimmy Nicholas), and then he got caught in a burning building.

Things looked dicey for a while, as Violet got word that Gallo was down inside the building, and was unable to get out. This information, coupled with the fact that the show promised to kill a main character off, had us collectively clutching our seats.

Did he make it out?

Is Gallo leaving Chicago Fire?

Thankfully, yes. In classic One Chicago fashion, there was a bait-and-switch involving Gallo, and he was eventually able to find his way out of the building. We were all able to breath a sigh of relief as the beloved character made his way to safety. He looked a little banged up, and it’s too early to tell if he’ll suffer any notable injuries as a result, but at least he was alive.

The same couldn’t be said for Chief Hawkins (Jimmy Nicholas), who attempts to rescue someone moments after Gallo and winds up buried under the collapsed building. Gallo and Violet are then forced to watch on as Hawkins is declared dead.

The event is going to radically change Gallo and Violet, as well as they way they interact with each other. Both of them were close to Hawkins, and their involvement in the fire that took his life is an emotional weight they’re going to struggle with indefinitely.

Some fans have voiced concern over Gallo potentially leaving Fire, but there’s a few reasons why this won’t happen. For one, Gallo is one of the core members of the 51, and has been set up by the writers as a leader among the younger characters.

Secondly, the character’s romantic subplot with Violet is going to get exponentially more complicated now, and the writers would not miss a chance to delve into said complications.

Gallo is around for the long haul, and it’ll be difficult/fascinating to watch him deal with the emotional fallout of what happened with Chief Hawkins.
