Another week, another fleet of viewers who wonder if Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) is back. The beloved character announced his departure in the episode “A Good Man”, though he made it clear that he has plans to return to Chicago PD.

There was also a behind-the-scenes photo that suggested Halstead was still popping up on the set, and could be playing a bigger role in season 10 than we were initially led to believe.

Did his anticipated return happen last night on Chicago PD?

Where is Jay on Chicago PD?

Unfortunately, it did not. Halstead is still missing in action, having decided to move to Bolivia to take down various drug cartels. He told Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) that he plans to be down there for eight months, barring any accidents or untimely deaths. Unfortunately, Upton hasn’t been able to move on from the news.

The episode “Pink Cloud” may not feature any Halstead, but it’s all about the ways in which his absence has taken a toll on his wife. Upton has dedicated herself to her work in an effort to block out her feelings, and the results have not been healthy.

She hasn’t been sleeping, she’s spent too much time around the precinct, and she’s become so obsessed with the job that even workaholic Trudy Platt (Amy Morton) is telling her to go home.

Upton dominates the episode, not only in terms of her arc but her doggedness with regards to the case. She stumbles upon a kidnapped teenager, and while piecing together she clues, she realizes that the son of the new chief, Sean O’Neal (Jefferson White), has suspicious ties to a string of girls who have gone missing.

The episode doesn’t end with a clear resolution, but instead the implication that Upton has hit on something that could threaten the infrastructure of the IU as she knows it. If she tries to take down the son of the man who runs her precinct, she could be setting up her team members for a world of hurt.

On the bright side, the case does provide some much-needed respite from her feelings of loss over Halstead, so we may be looking at a step in the right direction. Here’s hoping it yields some just results in the process.
